Squamish RCMP investigating hate-motivated incident

staff report
October 30, 2023 4:59pm

Squamish RCMP are investigating a hate-motivated incident after an indigenous carving was damaged.

The incident was reported to the RCMP today by the Squamish Nation after they discovered damage to a carving memorializing past members of the George family.

The memorial carving was erected near Tunnel Point near Lions Bay by British Columbia Transportation and Highways and the Squamish Nation. The damage to the memorial carving is significant, and nearby graffiti in the area indicates it was racially-motivated.

Police have canvassed the area and are taking further investigative steps to find out who was behind this troubling incident.  Squamish RCMP is urging anyone who has information to please call them at 604-892-6100 and quote file # 6946.
