Squamish is reminding residents and visitors to stay vigilant amid ongoing wildfire risk, as British Columbia remains under a provincial state of emergency due to a considerable number of wildfires and vulnerable conditions across the province.
According to a social media post by the District of Squamish, a wildfire near Brohm Lake on Friday, August 7, was extinguished after a quick response from BC Wildfire ground and air crews, an event officials say highlights the real risks currently facing the region.
Off-road vehicles are prohibited on Crown land to help reduce wildfire risk, as wildfire response resources can be severely strained during periods of high activity, according to the post. A campfire ban also remains in effect for everyone in the District of Squamish and surrounding regions.
Authorities are actively responding to complaints of people ignoring the bans and will issue fines, with a minimum fine of $1,150 per person found around a fire. Further restrictions, including a possible backcountry access ban, may be introduced if fire conditions worsen or additional resources are diverted to new fires, the post states.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated through the District of Squamish, Squamish Fire Rescue, BC Wildfire, DriveBC and VoyentAlert. The post notes that the high number of people recreating in the region creates a dangerous scenario for forest fires, and that now is not the time for risky behaviour while recreating or camping. Anyone who witnesses fire ban violations or wildfires is asked to call 911 within municipal boundaries.
But most of Squamish does not meet Fire Smart standards, and the DOS has no plans to do so, claiming a lack of funds.
