Those planning to visit Garibaldi Provincial Park in the winter should take a formal avalanche training course, advises BC Parks.
In an advisory, BC Parks cautions about winter conditions in the Park, including at Wedgemount Lake, Spearhead area, Rubble Creek trailhead area, and Diamond Head area. BC Parks says the trail and parking lot are not maintained in the winter. Visitors will encounter deep snow, ice, and slippery conditions, and microspikes, snowshoes, or backcountry skiing equipment are strongly recommended.
“Those visiting Wedgemount Lake during the fall, winter, and spring months will be exposed to avalanche terrain. Visitors should bring and know how to use an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel,” the advisory says. “It is recommended that visitors consider taking a formal avalanche training course before visiting the Park during winter months.”
In the Diamond Head area, vehicles must be equipped with tire chains beyond the chain-up area, as per posted signage or directions by park staff. “Snow socks” or spike belts are not considered chains, and failure to comply may result in a $115 fine and a possible eviction from the Park.
Vehicles blocking snow removal equipment on the road will be towed at the owners’ expense. Parking is now allowed on Ring Creek Road, and cars parked illegally will be towed. BC Parks also has a hazard warning for Rubble Creek trailhead access via Daisy Lake Road.
“This road is plowed intermittently. Please drive at risk and prepare for ice, snow, and narrow sections with oncoming vehicles. Use of a 4×4 vehicle with high clearance and tire chains is highly recommended.”
