Skier dead after ‘serious incident’ on Blackcomb Mountain

January 23, 2024 6:32pm

A 62-year-old man has died in a serious incident that unfolded on Blackcomb Mountain on Friday, January 19.

Whistler Blackcomb said ski patrol members responded to the serious incident in Sapphire Bowl, an expert-designated area in the Blackcomb Glacier Provincial Park.

Following the incident, a duty physician promptly administered on-site emergency care. Despite the immediate efforts, the guest was tragically pronounced deceased and subsequently transported off Blackcomb Mountain, as announced by Whistler Blackcomb in an official statement.

Belinda Trembath, Chief Operating Officer of Whistler Blackcomb, expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the resort and the entire Vail Resorts family. “Whistler Blackcomb, Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol, and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” Trembath said.

The incident’s circumstances and the exact cause of the man’s death are yet to be determined. Whistler Blackcomb has pledged to cooperate in the ongoing investigation to shed light on the unfortunate incident that claimed the life of the seasoned skier.

“Whistler Blackcomb, Whistler Blackcomb, Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” said  Belinda Trembath, Whistler Blackcomb’s COO.
