The District of Squamish will start work on a retrofit project at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre this summer. The Green and Accessibility Retrofit Project is the first of many projects slated for Brennan Park Recreation Centre and is funded by $11.7 million from the federal government.

District says this work must follow grant requirements of the federal government, which are strict on what can be built under this platform. A new pool or ice rink doesn’t fall under this grant guideline. A public information meeting last week revealed that the design of a new ice rink will begin in 2028.

The Green Retrofit project will include upgrades to the ice arena and pool heating and cooling system upgrades, ice arena roof insulation replacement, HEPA filter installation, and staged landscaping to include a no-water garden, bee-friendly plants, and solar lighting.

The construction project includes a new customer service area of 3,900 square feet, a new elevator for second-floor access, and renovation of the second-floor mezzanine into a fitness and program room with adaptable equipment. Renovation of the lobby and ice rink change rooms are also planned.

Last year, the district said it is working on an expanded 8-lane swimming pool and a new ice rink as part of a master planning process for Brennan Park Recreation Centre.
