Squamish’s community choir is inviting guests to help celebrate the power and inspiration of poetry this spring.

The Sea to Sky Singers’ spring concerts, titled “Well Versed!,” will be a showcase of poetry, featuring choral arrangements of songs whose lyrics were written by some of the English language’s greatest wordsmiths — including Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Longfellow, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sara Teasdale and Mark Twain.

“Poetry inspires us to think big thoughts — to contemplate love and life, to persevere through hardship, and to find the splendour in all of life’s experiences,” said Veronica McPhee, the Sea to Sky Singers’ music director. “Our shows will also feature a few surprises, including a nod to much-loved nursery rhymes.”

The performances occur Saturday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m. at St. John The Divine Anglican Church, 1930 Diamond Rd.  Andrea Cotter will accompany choral arrangements on piano. In addition to the music, three local poets—Emily Buck, Farrah Theresa, and Yin Xzi Ho—will engage attendees with a Poetry Slam, a Typewriter Poetry session, and a collaborative audience poem.

Since COVID, Squamish’s non-auditioned community choir has experienced a surge in participation, with a record 55 singers having taken part in rehearsals beginning in January. Tickets for the shows are $25 for adults and teens and free for children 12 and under. They can be purchased online at seatoskysingers.net or at the door.
