Re: the so-called “bear attack” in the Estuary. Letting your dog off leash into the thick bush, and then experiencing a mama bear protect her cubs is arguably not a “bear attack”, but another learning opportunity to be a responsible dog owner when in nature with wildlife. I am glad the woman is not seriously injured, but let’s be mindful of respecting and protecting all living beings when enjoying our beautiful surroundings.

Well said..why is the bear always the one blamed?

This has been a long standing problem in the estuary caused by human stupidity! Leash your dog and know your surroundings. I have no sympathy for this person as mama bear was protecting her young in her home. Idiot human should be fined.

It would be lovely if the title of the article could mention that the bear attack was provoked. Leaving your dog off-leash on a trail can provoke encounters and should be avoided. I’m relieved the woman is recovering from her injuries and that the dog survived but this was definitely not the bear’s fault. She’s in her natural habitat protecting her cubs. Had the dog been leashed, the attack might have been avoided but, even then, we must assess the risks when going hiking on any trail. Its their land and we should be very mindful of our impact and presence on it.

Well said. I hope the person is okay but she definitely should have had her dog leashed. It’s mind boggling why humans still can’t have common sense while on the trails etc
