The District of Squamish Fire Rescue has rescinded the campfire ban due to continued wet conditions and a high compliance rate that reduced abandoned or unattended campfire complaints. However, residents are reminded that a Residential Campfire Permit is now required for backyard fires.
SFR acknowledges residents’ efforts to adhere to the regulations and recognizes the potential confusion caused by differing municipal and provincial fire regulations. It’s important to note that provincial fire regulations apply only to Crown land, BC Parks, and areas outside local government authority.
SFR said it collaborates closely with neighbouring communities to ensure safety and mitigate wildfire risks.
The provincial wildfire situation and weather conditions before the Victoria Day long weekend were concerning, prompting a corridor-wide effort to preserve resources and reduce the likelihood of human-caused wildfires. A campfire ban will be reconsidered if conditions necessitate it in the future.
Residential Campfire Permit Required
The District of Squamish Residential Campfire Permit is mandatory for campfires on private residential properties, with the property owner’s written permission, or in designated commercial campgrounds within Squamish boundaries. Fires are never permitted in public areas such as beaches, parks, or riverbanks and are subject to bylaw enforcement.
Permit holders are reminded to review and adhere to the conditions of the campfire permit before lighting a campfire.
