The District of Squamish has downgraded emergency Stage 4 water restrictions to Stage 3 for the University Heights neighbourhood.
This adjustment comes despite recent warm weather that led to an 11% increase in water demand across the rest of Squamish. University Heights residents, however, achieved a 12% reduction in water use, resulting in a 23% reduction in potential water demand for the area.
The District has reduced emergency Stage 4 water restrictions due to combined water conservation efforts and reservoir refill gains to ensure sufficient water storage to provide adequate fire protection. Under Stage 3 restrictions, the use of sprinklers is prohibited. Residents can water flowers, trees, shrubs, and vegetables using a hand-held container, a hose with a shut-off nozzle, or micro or drip irrigation systems between 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
The repair of the complex water main break may take several weeks to complete. The District will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Residents are urged to maintain their water conservation efforts. District will provide further updates if the situation changes.
