The Squamish RCMP is investigating an act of vandalism that occurred at the Squamish BMX park. In a press release, Squamish RCMP said on August 16, 2024, two ‘unknown individuals’ on Surron bikes caused significant damage to the park.
The vandalism has impacted the local community, particularly the youth who regularly use the park. The repairs are expected to be substantial, and the park is currently closed while crews work to restore it.
Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible for this act of vandalism. If you were in the area during the time of the incident, or if you have any information that could aid in this investigation, please get in touch with the Sea to Sky RCMP – Squamish at (604) 892-6100 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
The Squamish BMX Club has also canceled an upcoming race after the track was vandalised by two people, despite being approached and asked to stop. Their actions left deep ruts in the track, making it unsafe for BMX racers.
“This is a really big problem for our club,” the Squamish BMX Club said in a Facebook post. “We are a community non-profit run 100% by volunteers, and we take great pride in this public amenity we have created for all to enjoy.”
The club is now calling on the community to help with repairs and is encouraging parents to educate their children about the proper use of the track. Volunteers are invited to assist with track maintenance on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
“The Sea to Sky RCMP – Squamish is committed to maintaining the safety and integrity of our community spaces, and we will pursue all leads to ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” said Sgt. Dallas Langley, Operations NCO Sea to Sky RCMP – Squamish.
