A family dog in Oak Bay was euthanized following an attack by a male deer in Oak Bay on Vancouver Island.
On October 30, around 7:30 p.m., the dog, a 15-year-old deaf Husky-Shepherd mix, was in the yard of the family home when it encountered the deer, which was grazing on vegetation nearby. According to police, the deer “bucked” the dog, spearing it in the chest with its antlers.
The dog, which had been moving along the property’s perimeter, approached the deer before the animal lowered its head and struck. The dog was severely injured, suffering a 3- to 4-inch puncture wound to the chest, and was taken to a veterinary clinic, where it was later euthanized.
Oak Bay Police expressed condolences to the family. Animal Control and Conservation have been notified.
Officials remind the public to give deer and other wildlife ample space, especially during the fall rutting season, and to report any aggressive wildlife encounters.
