Fall storm to bring strong winds to Howe Sound

staff report
November 18, 2024 7:39am

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Howe Sound and Metro Vancouver.

The agency warns of ‘very windy’ conditions from Tuesday through Wednesday morning, though thunderstorms are not expected in Vancouver. On Tuesday, a significant fall storm is forecast to impact the region, developing approximately 400 kilometres west of Vancouver Island.

Strong southeasterly winds will begin affecting coastal areas Tuesday afternoon, with the highest wind speeds expected Tuesday night. Mainland inlets and valleys may experience very strong outflow winds during this period. While heavy rain is possible in some areas, wind will be the primary concern.

Gusty conditions are expected to continue into Wednesday morning before gradually easing later. Environment Canada warns that the storm may cause downed trees, broken branches, and power outages. Travel disruptions are also possible, and residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects and prepare for potential impacts.
