Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Squamish with heavy rain expected to persist from midday today through Boxing Day. The warning highlights potential hazards, including localized flooding, travel disruptions, and power outages.
Rainfall amounts are forecast to reach 50 to 80 mm across the region, with higher totals exceeding 100 mm anticipated in areas such as the North Shore, northern Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge. The precipitation could cause water pooling on roads, creating hazardous driving conditions, especially in low-lying areas.
The heavy rainfall is attributed to a series of weather systems affecting the region. The first system will move in during the afternoon, bringing rain to Metro Vancouver and Squamish. In higher-elevation areas above 300 metres, wet snow may briefly occur, potentially leading to slippery conditions. The rain will continue through Boxing Day as a second low-pressure system impacts the South Coast. By the afternoon of Boxing Day, the rainfall is expected to taper off to scattered showers.
