A popular trail on Vancouver Island has been closed due to an aggressive cougar.
The Ammonite Falls Regional Trail, between the Creekside trailhead and the falls viewpoint, near Nanaimo, has been temporarily closed due to the presence of an aggressive cougar. Regional District of Nanaimo says the closure is a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and will remain in effect until further notice.
On January 1, 2025, a cougar exhibiting aggressive behaviour was seen on the trail. Additional reports have indicated that the cougar is guarding its recent kill. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service has been notified and is monitoring the situation. Warning signs were posted at trailheads on Friday, January 4, 2025, and official trail closure notices were installed on Monday, January 6.
Visitors are urged to respect the closures and exercise caution in surrounding areas.
“Cougars are an integral part of our natural environment,” a park spokesperson stated. “We advise the public to take precautions during wildlife encounters, such as traveling in groups, keeping pets leashed, and carrying bear spray.”
