A blast of cold air is coming to the South Coast, bringing snow, freezing temperatures, and slippery roads in the days ahead.
The cold front will move in late Friday, dropping temperatures and bringing a mix of rain and snow. By tonight, temperatures will fall to near or below freezing, which could make roads and sidewalks icy. Special weather alerts are in effect for Howe Sound, Whistler and Vancouver Island.
This weekend, cold air from the Arctic will move in, bringing scattered flurries. Some areas may see accumulating snow, but totals are still uncertain. Snow squalls could cause sudden drops in visibility, making travel difficult.
Next week, the coldest air yet will settle over the region. Temperatures will be well below normal, and strong outflow winds will make it feel even colder. The weather will be mostly dry, but parts of southern Vancouver Island, including Nanaimo and the Saanich Peninsula, could see more snow early in the week.
For now, most of the region will get rain today, with heavier amounts possible on the North Shore of Metro Vancouver. But as temperatures drop, winter conditions will take over.
Environment Canada warns that road conditions could change quickly. Travelers should check forecasts often and be ready for snow and ice. Severe weather reports can be sent by email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or shared on Twitter using #BCStorm.
