The Sea to Sky RCMP’s General Investigation Section launched an inquiry into the incident in the fall of 2022, enlisting support from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, the Integrated Forensic Identification Section, RCMP Digital Forensic Services, and the ‘E’ Division Interview Team due to the complexity of the case.

After a year-long investigation, several charges were filed against Cernos in November 2023. On January 23, 2025, he pleaded guilty to impaired driving, causing bodily harm, impaired driving, causing death, and failing to remain at the scene of a collision. Sentencing is scheduled for a later date.
