The Squamish Public Library, with Squamish Arts, is hosting the Squamish Zine Fest, an event celebrating zines and the DIY publishing movement. The festival aims to provide a platform for creative expression, foster accessibility, and strengthen community connections through self-published works.
A zine (pronounced “zeen”) is a small, self-made publication that operates outside mainstream publishing and commercial interests. Often produced on a low budget, zines have long been used to amplify underrepresented voices, challenge dominant narratives, and explore a range of themes, from personal storytelling to social commentary.
In the lead-up to the festival, the Squamish Public Library is accepting applications until March 17 from local zine-makers interested in securing a table at the event. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase, sell, and trade their work. Creators of all experience levels are encouraged to apply.
“Even if you don’t consider yourself a ‘zine-maker,’ you are,” said Clea Young, executive director of Squamish Arts. “Whatever you’re passionate or curious about can become the subject of a zine. This event is about giving space to diverse voices through an accessible, creative format.”
The festival will also mark the launch of the Squamish Public Library’s new Zine Collection, featuring a selection of independently published works across various topics, emphasizing locally relevant content. To reflect the DIY nature of zine-making, the library has partnered with Create Makerspace to design and build a custom shelving unit for the collection.
Rachel Bergquist, programs and outreach coordinator at the Squamish Library, noted the growing interest in zine culture within the community. “Zines are a versatile and inclusive medium,” she said. “It’s been exciting to see a zine scene take shape in Squamish, and I hope this initiative inspires more people to start creating and engaging with zines.”
Ahead of the festival, the library will offer two free zine-making workshops in March. Registration is required for both sessions.
