FortisBC will begin preparing a temporary construction laydown yard northeast of Valleycliffe in late March, following the District of Squamish’s issuance of a Temporary Use Permit earlier this month. Squamish Council approved the permit in the fall of 2024. The yard will store equipment and materials, and will include parking and fuelling areas.
The site is located near the intersection of Mamquam River Forest Service Road and Powerhouse Springs Road. Vegetation and tree clearing will begin in late March at the yard and along FortisBC’s new right of way. Work hours will be 7 am to 8 pm, Monday to Friday, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays.
FortisBC noted that the current plan is scaled back from its original proposal. A 2.5-acre section on the west side of the approved area has been removed from the plan, reducing the number of trees that need to be cleared. The company also confirmed that no site offices will be constructed at this location. The site was selected in consultation with Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation).
Several trail closures will be in effect, including the Connector Trail north of the construction area. FortisBC has notified nearby residents and local recreational groups and will post signage to inform trail users. The company has also advised that minor traffic delays are expected on nearby Forest Service Roads to accommodate large trucks. Traffic control personnel will be on site to manage traffic as needed.
