BC Utilities Commission to monitor gas prices after Carbon Tax removal

staff report
April 3, 2025 9:33am

The British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) will monitor retail fuel prices across the province to ensure consumers see savings at the pump following the planned removal of B.C.’s carbon tax.

Last week, the provincial government introduced legislation to eliminate the carbon tax on gasoline and diesel, effective April 1, 2025. The tax currently adds 17.61 cents per litre to gasoline and 20.74 cents per litre to diesel.

In response, the BCUC announced it will use its authority under the Fuel Price Transparency Act to collect data from gas stations throughout the province. The goal is to assess how quickly and accurately retail prices reflect the tax’s removal in both urban and rural markets.

BCUC said the initiative builds on its ongoing efforts to examine pricing practices in B.C.’s fuel sector. As Administrator of the Fuel Price Transparency Act, the BCUC is tasked with promoting transparency, competition, and public trust in the fuel market by publishing data on gasoline and diesel pricing.
