Woodfibre LNG applies for second floatel, to add 900 jobs

staff report
May 1, 2025 4:53pm

Woodfibre LNG is seeking regulatory approval to moor a second floatel at its project site near Squamish. The company also plans to add 900 skilled trades workers to its workforce.

The proposed accommodation barge would be located adjacent to the MV Isabelle X, the project’s current floatel, and will house additional non-local construction workers. The application will undergo a multi-level regulatory review, mirroring the process used for the first floatel.

“It is clear that Canada is looking to diversify its energy markets, and when complete, Woodfibre LNG will do exactly that by making more Canadian LNG available to Asian markets,” said Luke Schauerte, CEO of Woodfibre LNG. “If approved, the second floatel allows us to accelerate construction, create more jobs, and move closer to realizing the world’s first net-zero LNG export facility.”

Located seven kilometres southwest of Squamish, the project is expected to produce approximately 2.1 million tonnes of LNG annually. The use of floatels is a condition established through an amendment to the project’s Environmental Assessment Certificate approved by the B.C. government in November 2023. The Squamish Nation followed with its approval in December 2023.

The second floatel, if approved, would be developed and operated by Bridgemans Services Group, the same Vancouver-based company behind the Isabelle X.

“Bridgemans is proud to replicate the high standards of the MV Isabelle X with this new vessel,” said Brian Grange, President of Bridgemans. “It’s an honour to support a project that strengthens Canada’s global energy role while showcasing Canadian innovation in workforce housing.”

Bridgemans has committed to aligning the new floatel with the project’s net-zero mandate and other community and environmental commitments developed through extensive consultation.
