Man with knife arrested in Downtown Squamish

Squamish RCMP has arrested a man who was reportedly wandering around Downtown Squamish with a large knife.

Constable Kelly Wu of Squamish RCMP confirmed that the man had been arrested, though she didn’t provide any more details about the individual. “This matter has been dealt with by the RCMP. I can’t release anything more as it is in the court process,” she said.

On Tuesday, a Squamish resident took to social media to caution people about the man. “We just found a man wandering around our yard, talking to himself, and after he left, we noticed on our cameras that he had a large knife in his hands. Lock your doors and stay safe,” the resident wrote.

A Downtown Squamish resident is also raising alarm concerning incidents tied to encampments on a privately owned land near the Eaglewind. In his letter, Henry highlighted several unsettling incidents of rock-throwing by an individual experiencing mental health issues. While expressing empathy for the individuals living there, Henry said the public safety risks are unacceptable. “We’re in a very dense area with a lot of foot traffic, children and tax-paying residents terrified for their safety,” he wrote.

The District of Squamish says it is constrained in responding to public safety concerns, pointing to provincial jurisdiction over housing and health care services and the legal complexity of addressing homelessness.
