Man dies after suspected medical incident on Squamish river

staff report
July 25, 2025 10:03pm

A man has died following a suspected medical incident while riding a personal watercraft on the Squamish River, police say.

Squamish RCMP were notified around 1:47 p.m. on July 25 that an unresponsive man had been found in the river near the confluence with the Cheakamus River, just west of the Squamish Airport.

Emergency Health Services and Search and Rescue crews responded and attempted life-saving measures, but the man did not survive.

According to police, two individuals had been operating personal watercrafts in the area when they became separated. One rider later found the other unresponsive, floating, and brought him to shore with the aid of a personal flotation device. Squamish RCMP say they are working with the BC Coroners Service to determine the cause of death. Initial information suggests it may have been the result of a medical event.
