Tsunami watch issued for BC after massive earthquake in Russia

A tsunami watch has been issued for parts of British Columbia’s coast following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

Emergency Info BC says the watch is in effect for Tsunami Notification Zones A, B, C, and D, which include:

  • Zone A: North Coast and Haida Gwaii

  • Zone B: Central Coast and Northeast Vancouver Island, including Kitimat, Bella Coola, and Port Hardy

  • Zone C: Outer West Coast of Vancouver Island from Cape Scott to Port Renfrew

  • Zone D: Juan de Fuca Strait from Jordan River to Greater Victoria, including the Saanich Peninsula

The earthquake struck about 80 miles southeast of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka.

Officials are urging people in affected areas to stay tuned to local alerts and be prepared to move to higher ground if advised. No immediate evacuation orders have been issued at this time.
