The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) is investigating a cougar attack on a mountain biker near Squamish and is warning the public to stay away from the area.
The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Alpine Capone area along Brohm Ridge. According to COS, a cougar chased a man riding his bike, made contact with him, and continued to follow him down the trail for about 20 minutes.
The biker, who was walking backwards while holding his bike, threw rocks at the animal until it backed off. He suffered minor injuries. The attack was reported to COS on Friday morning.
Conservation officers are working with local government, as well as mountain biking and outdoor recreation groups, to alert the community. The attack site is near Garibaldi Provincial Park, where aggressive cougar activity led to trail closures earlier this summer. COS has not confirmed whether Thursday’s cougar is linked to earlier incidents.
Officials urge anyone heading outdoors to take precautions, including travelling in groups, making noise, leashing pets, and carrying bear spray. More safety information is available at WildSafeBC.com.
Cougar sightings or conflicts should be reported to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
