The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD), in partnership with GFL Squamish, announced that curbside totes containing hazardous or oversized items will not be collected.
These include items such as syringes, knives, batteries, motor oil, electronics, and anything flammable, corrosive, toxic, or explosive will be rejected due to risk fires in collection vehicles and waste facilities. Large items such as furniture, construction materials, and scrap metal are also not permitted, as they can damage equipment.
If a tote contains non-compliant material, GFL’s Tune-Up Team will tag it with a yellow notice explaining the issue. The tote will be tied shut, turned around, and left at the curb. Residents are asked to remove the items and take them to an appropriate facility.
Hazardous waste and used motor oil can be dropped off at the GFL Recycle Depot on Queens Way or at the Squamish Landfill. Other local options include Great Canadian Oil Change and Triton Automotive and Industrial Ltd. The Squamish ReBuild also accepts clean, reusable construction material, while the Squamish Bottle Depot and Squamish Landfill accept electronics. Batteries can also be brought to the GFL Recycle Depot.
For more information, residents can contact the SLRD or GFL Squamish.
