Rubble Creek trail in Garibaldi Park to close in fall

Rubble Creek trail in Garibaldi Park will close October 14–31 while BC Parks replaces a damaged bridge. Access to Garibaldi Lake will remain available through the Cheakamus Lake trailhead.

Garibaldi Park’s Rubble Creek trail will close this fall while crews replace a damaged bridge.  The closure is scheduled from October 14 to 31. Construction will shut down the Rubble Creek trail from the trailhead to the 6.5-kilometre junction.

The update came from a BC Parks notice, which states that the work is needed because a 2021 atmospheric river damaged the creek crossing at the 2-kilometre mark, forcing the park to install a temporary bridge that is no longer adequate.

“Although the temporary bridge was adequate for the interim, it is not a long-term solution,” Smeets said. “Further improvements to this area are required to ensure continued safe visitor access.”

Work will begin after the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, with completion expected by October 31. The project will be funded in part through federal Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements.  BC Parks said the steep terrain makes a temporary detour impossible.

Visitors will still be able to reach Garibaldi Lake using the Cheakamus Lake and Helm Creek trailheads. However, both Garibaldi Lake and Taylor Meadows campgrounds will be closed during the construction period due to limited parking at the Cheakamus trailhead. Taylor Meadows already closes each year from September 1 to October 31 to prevent human-wildlife conflicts.

In the email, Smeets said BC Parks will post updates and signage in the park and online to keep visitors informed about progress.
