Smoky skies from regional wildfires have pushed Squamish’s air quality to the highest risk level, according to the Air Quality Health Index. As of Wednesday, the index reached 10+, which indicates very high health risks from exposure, notes an advisory from District of Squamish.
In a press release, the district advises residents to reduce or avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially if they experience symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation, or difficulty breathing. “Stay inside if you have breathing difficulties and find a cool, ventilated place,” district says.
Vulnerable groups — including infants, children, the elderly, people with pre-existing health conditions, and sensitive individuals — are more likely to be affected by the smoke.
The AQHI forecast suggests air quality is expected to improve in Squamish over the next several days. More information and health guidance is available through HealthLink BC at 8-1-1, AirHealth.ca, and the BC Lung Association.
