A serious collision shut down the eastbound lanes of Highway 1 near Chilliwack for nearly eight hours on Wednesday, according to a media release from BC Highway Patrol. Police are now asking witnesses and drivers with dash camera video to come forward.

The crash happened on September 3 just before 3:30 p.m., when a white Toyota Tacoma and a black GMC Sierra collided east of the Yale Road exit. Both vehicles rolled into a ditch due to the force of the impact.

The driver of the Toyota, an 18-year-old man from Chilliwack, suffered minor injuries. The GMC driver, an elderly man from Alberta, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries that may be life-altering.

“Anyone who witnessed the driving behaviour, or has dash camera video, of the white Toyota pickup or the black GMC Sierra pickup in the minutes leading up to the collision is asked to call BC Highway Patrol – Chilliwack at 604-702-4039 and quote file (1501) 2025-37881,” Corporal Michael McLaughlin said in the media release.
