Squamish ice arena to remain closed until September 12

The Brennan Park Recreation Centre ice arena will remain closed until at least Friday, September 12, as District staff work to resolve ongoing humidity issues that have made the facility unsafe for use.

In a notice to the community, the District said that despite efforts to stabilize conditions inside the arena, humidity levels have not improved enough to reopen. According to the District, facilities staff are now evaluating two industrial equipment options to address the problem, both of which will result in a delayed reopening.

“There is a current system providing dehumidification, but it’s older equipment and is struggling under the current conditions,” the District stated. High outside temperatures, increased humidity, and the ongoing renovation project’s impacts have all contributed to the challenge.

While the team works to secure specialized equipment, they are also replacing key components of the existing system to improve its performance. A further update is expected early next week. Staff are in regular contact with user groups and are working on logistics and support related to the extended closure. An FAQ is also in development to address common questions from the community.

“We understand how extremely frustrating this is to our community ice users,” the District said. “We are diligently reviewing our options to implement the right solution and reopen the arena as soon as possible.”

With respect, isn’t this just Squamish Reporter reposting the District’s press release? Where’s the reporting, the journalistic questioning about how this could happen? How does this impact youth and the community as a whole? Who’s responsible for allowing this to happen?
