BC Hydro says it will construct an additional power line to ensure the Woodfibre LNG facility has reliable access to clean and renewable electricity.
In a press release, BC Hydro said the new transmission line is designed to support British Columbia’s economic growth while helping limit greenhouse gas emissions. By powering Woodfibre LNG with clean electricity rather than natural gas, the facility aims to produce liquefied natural gas (LNG) with emissions nine times lower than those of conventional export facilities, the company said.
Stage 2 of the project will build the transmission line along BC Hydro’s existing right of way from Cheekye substation through Brackendale to the Woodfibre LNG facility. According to BC Hydro, this approach avoids the need for a new route and minimizes environmental and community impacts. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2028, with the project currently in the early consultation and engagement phase.
An open house is scheduled for March 31, 2026, to gather feedback from residents and stakeholders.
