The Sea to Sky School District has sent a letter to families addressing the emotional impact of a deadly shooting in Tumbler Ridge that killed nine community members, offering guidance on supporting children through the tragedy.
In a message dated Feb. 11, Superintendent Chris Nicholson acknowledged the widespread distress caused by the incident, noting that both adults and children are struggling to process the devastating news.
“The tragic shooting in Tumbler Ridge that claimed nine members of the community is understandably upsetting for adults and children alike,” Nicholson wrote, adding that even indirect connections to the region or those affected can amplify distress.
The superintendent emphasized that young people may experience a wide range of emotions — including fear, confusion, sadness, or anger — and will look to adults for guidance on how to make sense of the events and feel safe.
Nicholson also outlined several recommendations for families navigating conversations with children: limit exposure to news and social media, as repeated viewing of upsetting content can heighten anxiety; listen more than speak by asking what children have heard and how they are feeling; provide age-appropriate facts while being honest but gentle; and maintain normal routines to help children feel secure during uncertain times.
Nicholson assured families that student safety and well-being remain the district’s highest priority. Counsellors and trusted adults are available to support students who may need additional care, and parents are encouraged to reach out to their schools with any concerns.
The letter also provided links to several resources for families seeking additional guidance, including Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Families and Educators, Care for Caregivers: Tips for Families and Educators, How to Talk with Kids About Violence, Crime, War, and Tragedy, and Explaining the News to Our Kids.
“During times like this, compassion matters deeply,” Nicholson wrote. “We encourage all members of our community to extend care and empathy to those who may be more directly impacted.”

Flags at all Sea to Sky School District schools and worksites will be lowered to half-mast in remembrance.
“Our thoughts are with the Tumbler Ridge community during this incredibly difficult time,” the superintendent concluded.
The Sea to Sky School District serves communities including Squamish, Whistler, and Pemberton in southwestern British Columbia.
