A Squamish cabinetmaking apprentice walked away from this year’s Skills Canada National Competition with both a prestigious regional award and $1,500 toward his education.

Michael Merrin, a Level 4 apprentice at BCIT, was named the RBC Best of Region Award winner for British Columbia at the 2026 competition, held in Toronto on May 28-29. He competed in the cabinetmaking category against students and apprentices from across the country.

“This was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Merrin. “I’m thankful for my years of support from peers, teachers and trainers.”

According to the press release, the RBC Best of Region Awards were presented for the fifth consecutive year at the national competition, going to the competitor with the best weighted score from each province and territory.

The competition drew over 550 students from all regions of Canada, who faced off in more than 40 skilled trade and technology competitions. It is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition of its kind for students and apprentices in the country.

Merrin said the prize money will go toward practical needs in his work. “I’m a strong advocate for the trade, manufacturing custom furniture which I can provide for family and communities,” he said. “The RBC Award will help with tools and equipment, things that will make every day on-site easier.”

According to the press release, the competition aims to give young Canadians hands-on work experience related to skilled trade and technology careers by providing a forum where they can compete against their peers nationally.
