More than 600 BMX riders from Canada and the United States will descend on Squamish this weekend for the Sea to Sky BMX Nationals, the third of seven national events on the BMX Canada circuit.
Racing at Squamish BMX runs Friday through Sunday, June 12 to 14. Friday’s racing begins at 3 p.m., Saturday at 11:30 a.m., and Sunday at 9 a.m. Admission is free for spectators.
According to a press release, competitors will be grouped into heats of up to eight riders, organized by age, gender, and skill level. The youngest participants — as young as two years old — will race strider-style bikes on a shortened course, while Superclass, the premier BMX racing category, features prize money for top men’s and women’s finishers on the full course.
The weekend’s races are dedicated to the late Todd Pope, who was active with the Squamish BMX Club locally and with BMX Canada nationally.
New this year, according to the press release, is a Track vs. Track Club Team program, along with Superclass racing running on both Friday and Saturday. Olympic hopefuls are also expected to be in attendance.
BMX Canada licensed riders who have not yet attended a national event this season can take advantage of a buy-one-get-one registration offer. The full schedule and registration details are available at bmxcanada.org.
The event is sanctioned by BMX Canada and supported by Impact Canopy, Tangent Products, and Fly Racing. According to the press release, media interviews and photo opportunities with local and national riders and BMX Canada representatives are available throughout the weekend.
