Local collective seeks backing for community food book

A grassroots collective is asking Sea-to-Sky residents to help bring a regional food book to print — with a community event this weekend in Squamish marking the campaign’s push for support.

The Sea to Sky Cooks Collective, a team of four women, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund Sea to Sky Cooks: Food, Culture & Story, a book documenting the farmers, makers, producers, chefs, and home cooks behind the region’s food systems. The campaign runs until July 10, with a goal of $21,600.

According to the news release, the book spans the corridor from Lions Bay to Lillooet, covering wild harvest and foraging, local farms, food sovereignty, corridor athletes and the cooks who fuel them, and the everyday food rituals that bind communities together. Local writers, illustrators, and photographers have been engaged to contribute.

“The culinary landscape that exists right now, in 2026, is a specific and remarkable thing,” said Terra Gaddes, co-founder of the collective. “We want to document it before it shifts — but we can’t do it without the community behind us.”

The campaign runs on an all-or-nothing model — backers are not charged if the $21,600 goal is not met by July 10. Those who pledge receive a copy of the book or a package of their choosing. Funds will go toward printing and fair pay for contributing writers, illustrators, and photographers. A portion of future sales will benefit the Squamish Climate Action Network.

According to the news release, the collective hosts the Longest Day Recipe Exchange this Saturday, June 20, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Squamish Library. Participants print a cyanotype cover, write out a favourite recipe, and bind it into a shared community collection. Admission is $10; registration is available at seatoskycooks.ca/event-list.

Leading the event is Charlie Friesen — sourdough baker, culinary historian, and operator of FromCharlie Catering in the Sea to Sky. The event is supported by grants from the Squamish Arts Council and the District of Squamish.
