Brennan Park Recreation Centre has completed the first phase of a green and accessibility retrofit, officials announced last week.
Patrick Weiler, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea-to-Sky Country, Squamish Nation Elder Linda Williams and District of Squamish Mayor Armand Hurford gathered to mark the completion of the $21-million project, known as Project One. According to the news release, it is the first of several planned projects for the facility, with future phases proceeding as funding is secured.
More than 75 per cent of the work was hidden behind walls, ceilings and in mechanical rooms, including a new centralized heat pump system, upgraded ammonia and fire alarm systems, a new rooftop unit, and structural, energy efficiency and accessibility improvements.
Public-facing upgrades include a renovated lobby, an elevator to a newly accessible second floor with a mezzanine viewing area overlooking the ice arena, new change rooms and storage lockers, universal washrooms, two new program rooms, and a covered walkway to the pool entrance.
The project was funded by more than $11.7 million from the federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program and $1.2 million from the Build Communities Strong Fund.
According to the news release, a Recreation Centre Task Force launched in June 2026 is now studying options to expand and upgrade recreational facilities at the site, with council presentations expected over the next year.
The District has also secured $10.4 million for Project Two, which will address the building’s exterior — including insulation, windows, doors, seismic performance and electrical systems. A timeline will be set once the task force’s findings are available.
Weiler said the upgrades will make the facility more accessible and energy efficient, while Hurford called the project the first step in a long-term modernization plan for Brennan Park.
