The District of Squamish lifted its residential campfire ban at noon on Sept. 3, following the Coastal Fire Centre’s decision to rescind its campfire prohibitions.
According to the news release by the district, the lifting of the Category 1 campfire ban applies within District boundaries. All existing residential campfire permits were reinstated at noon on Sept. 3.
Residential campfires are permitted only on private property after obtaining a free residential campfire permit, according to the news release. Campfires remain prohibited on public lands, including parks, beaches, riversides, lakes, forested areas, and trails within the District, unless they are within a designated campground facility.
Residents lighting a Category 1 campfire must follow wildfire regulations, including not burning in windy conditions, maintaining a fuel break, not leaving the fire unattended, and fully extinguishing the fire before leaving.
According to the news release, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited within the District and throughout the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction. Fireworks, binary exploding targets, burn barrels or cages, controlled air incinerators, air curtain burners and carbonizers also remain prohibited.
