Squamish painter Steve Baylis opens Far From Here, a solo exhibition of his paintings, at Sea to Sky Gallery in Britannia Beach on Saturday, Nov. 21, with an opening reception from 4 to 7 pm, according to a news release.

A small subscription keeps the Squamish Reporter going.

The exhibition runs until Monday, Dec. 14, Thursday to Monday, noon until sunset, at Sea to Sky Gallery, 105 Church Street, Britannia Beach.

Baylis paints in oil and cold wax on Baltic birch panel. Each painting is built up in about ten layers of transparent glaze, with a week of drying between each layer, so a single painting takes around six months. From across the room, each one reads as a single image. Up close, it comes apart into thousands of separate marks, the news release says.

Anger, joy, and all other feelings and emotions are expressed into my art, creating a visual manifestation of human emotions, Baylis says. In doing so, each artwork becomes a gateway to another world.

Far From Here is his first solo exhibition since Contemplated Realities at Ian Tan Gallery in Vancouver in 2019, and his first since moving to Squamish.

Baylis showed alongside Gordon Smith at Seymour Art Gallery in North Vancouver in 2022, and his solo exhibition Manifestation of Intention was shown at Seymour Art Gallery and the Firehall Arts Centre in 2018. His work has been featured by CBC Arts, International Artist and VICE’s The Creators Project, and has been exhibited in Lisbon, Portugal.
