There is one big reason Nesters Market is making a new foray into health food and wellness: Squamish.
Health consciousness and fitness drives Squamish and the new store is driven by that ethos, says Nesters Manager, Sean Daly.
“Perhaps it’s our great outdoors which makes people want to go for a bike ride or climb or just go for a run, we have a community that is in tune with their health. Our new section really is recognition of that desire of wanting to live a healthy lifestyle,” Sean Daly
“There is something about Squamish that really makes you want to get fit and healthy,” Daly said.
“Perhaps it’s our great outdoors which makes people want to go for a bike ride or climb or just go for a run, we have a community that is in tune with their health. Our new section really is recognition of that desire of wanting to live a healthy lifestyle.”
The new store was in part a personal initiative of Sean Daly, who said he recognized a need in the community for health products as well as wellness advice.
Daly, a regular at the CrossFit gym in town, says his conversations with community members underlined the need for a store that could offer a broad range of products, from sports supplements and superfoods to Kombucha and Kimchi.
The new-addition of a pharmacy, as well as a juice bar, makes the store a one-stop shop for customers who come to Nesters for their grocery shopping.
“Whether its nutritional supplements, probiotics, sports nutrition, natural skin and body care products, or herbal medicine, there is a lot we offer and it is really convenient for our clients to shop here for both their grocery and health care needs,” says Shelagh Guinane, Wellness Manager at Nesters.
Shelagh is an herbalist with over twenty-five years of experience guiding people in health and wellness. Prior to her Nesters position, she has spent the last twenty years as a manager and coordinator for Choices Market in Vancouver, where she advised local customers on anything ranging from gut health to the efficacy of Ayurvedic herbs.
Many of these traditional herbs and medicines have been a staple in Asian countries for centuries and they are slowly making their way into western diets. Shelagh offers expert advice in this area of interest.
With her knowledge and expertise, Shelagh can answer and guide consumers throughout the department to better enable health and vitality. Shelagh is there to answer any questions and offer advice on all products available at the store.
“Squamish is a very health conscious community and people are interested in finding out how they can live a holistic lifestyle. My mission here at Nesters is to guide our local customers towards reaching their own personal goals.” she said.
Along with Shelagh and the wellness team, there is also a brand-new pharmacy in this new section of Nesters Squamish. Pharmacy Manager, Lexi Shewchuk, is excited about the new opportunity. Lexi specializes in Travel Health, obtaining the Certificate of KnowledgeTM from the International Society of Travel Medicine in 2015.
“I recognized a need in the community for travel health – folks in the Sea to Sky area love to travel, especially to destinations that are off the beaten path. It’s very rewarding to help them safely plan and prepare for these trips.”
The pharmacy team at Nesters can get you ready when planning a trip outside Canada, particularly in developing countries where different food and lifestyle choices can affect your overall health on the trip. From immunizations to proper precautions with food and water, the pharmacy is a great resource for the Squamish community.
The store also likes to feature local products such as Be Clean Naturally Soap and Pure Earth fermented foods to name a few. If you have just come from the gym, there is a juice bar that makes fresh smoothies and raw food.
You’ll also find Spark Kombucha and Squamish Water Kefir on tap. From omega-3 fish oils to eco-friendly dental hygiene options, the new wellness area really has it all.
One of Sean Daly’s favourite is a cricket bar, sustainable, eco-conscious and full of protein. “I’d definitely want you to try that,” says a smiling Sean Daly.
