Police urge diligence after hikers stranded overnight atop Sea to Sky Gondola

It’s a phone call that the local police say they have received several times in the last few years. It’s from hapless hikers who have missed the last Sea to Sky Gondola run and are now calling for help.

Squamish RCMP received a similar call last week, when two hikers from Vancouver took the gondola up but missed the last gondola ride down.

Concerned about their safety, the hikers contacted the local police, who guided them to the appropriate trails. Search and Rescue were also advised, and both hikers made it to safety in the early morning.

Local police officials say there have been similar calls in the past, and would like to inform tourists and residents that there is a specific time the last Gondola leaves.

If you miss it, you will be required to find an alternate walking route down, police said.

Police is urging diligence as you plan a trip up the Gondola. Checks maps for alternate route locations and know the time the last gondola leaves and plan your trip accordingly.

Totally irresponsible. They should not have called the Police or no other third party should have done. They are hikers and should be able to handle sleeping…perhaps, on the Gondola deck or nearby. Failing that they could well use their “hiking’ skills to walk down the trail BFD. Or perhaps they didn’t even pack a flashlight…but I doubt it because most cell phones have a built-in flashlight. Absolutely no sympathy!
