High streamflow advisory issued for Stawamus River

December 11, 2018 9:57am

A high streamflow advisory has been issued for the South Coast, including Howe Sound, the Stawamus River and tributaries along the Sea-to-Sky Highway.

A high streamflow advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected.

Minor flooding in low-lying areas, however, is possible. Use extra caution and stay well back from river banks.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Howe Sound. Heavy rain is forecast for Thursday with rainfall totals up to 60 millimetres.  An additional storm is expected to arrive later on Friday.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
