Child care with rooftop play area planned in Park Royal Mall

April 24, 2019 2:36am

West Vancouver councillors will soon mull over plans for a new child care with a rooftop play area in the Park Royal Mall.

The new child care facility will be located in the North side of the mall, in an existing two-storey unit at the rear of the mall, to the west of the Bay.

The facility will be a 9,368 square feet of indoor spaces, on both ground and the second floor.

The proposal involves alterations to the mall exterior so the child care can meet provincial  regulations for natural light and play.

The applicant also plans to provide over 3,000 square feet of rooftop outdoor play. The new childcare will be able to accommodate 96 students, from age 36 months to Grade 1.

There will be two classrooms for the younger children on the upper floor with windows facing playground, and four classes on main floor with windows facing west.

The playground features planting, play mounds, leg ends, custom play structures and tricycle path.

No additional parking is being proposed.

The proposed alterations include new windows, openings, doors, and removing a section of the roof to create an outdoor playing area.

The play area will be finished with high quality materials and is designed to encourage interaction and early childhood development, according to the applicant.
