Man who lost home in Australian bushfire wins $1 million in lottery

January 9, 2020 2:39pm

Miracles do happen — even in the middle of mishaps.

An Australian man from Mount Cotton, south of Brisbane lost his home to bushfire late last year. The home was uninsured, and he had no means to rebuild it.

He has now won $1 million in lottery, and hopes to rebuild his home.

“Did I win one million dollars?” the man, who wants to remain anonymous, said when an official from the lottery corporation contacted him at work.

“Am I seeing things? Is this real? Wow. This is unreal. Thank you so much,” he exclaimed.

The emotional winner said he hoped his unexpected windfall symbolised the beginning of better things to come.

“I can’t wait to go home and give my wife a big kiss and a cuddle!” he told the lottery official. “The entry was marked with her special numbers, and now they’ve delivered in a big way. This is a miracle!” He held the only division one winning entry nationally.

He said all that was left of the home was a few charred teacups.

“This really has come at the most incredible time,” he said. “We didn’t know if we would ever be able to rebuild but now we definitely can!”
