Squamish RCMP are warning the public about phone scams and internet frauds being attempted in town.
On January 30, a victim bought some equipment from a seller who was using a popular internet buy-and-sell site to commit fraud.
The victim electronically transferred $500 from his account to the seller but stopped the money transfer after realizing the transaction was fraudulent.
These types of crimes are hard to trace, police say.
Squamish RCMP are reminding the community to take precaution when doing online transactions. The Squamish RCMP detachment parking lot can be used as a safe place to pick up purchased items.
In an attempted phone scam, an unknown female caller spoke with a local resident on February 1.
The caller said she was calling from the Canada Revenue Agency, and had an arrest warrant for a number of frauds allegedly committed by the local.
She said an RCMP investigator would also contact him. The caller id on display was also from Squamish RCMP to make the call look legitimate.
This is a common fraudulent call, police say, and are reminding the public that Canada Revenue Agency and RCMP do not conduct business in this way.
