Help decode the Woodfibre quilt with more than 100 names

For more than 65 years, the quilt sat in Mary MacGregor’s closet at her home in Garibaldi Highlands.

It’s a quilt her mother-in-law gave her in 1947, when Mary and her husband, Lewis MacGregor, were leaving Woodfibre for Vancouver, a memento for their stay in the once-vibrant community.

When Mary left town, she handed the quilt over to the Squamish Historical Society. With more than 100 names on it, the quilt is an evocative tapestry of memory and history of a once-thriving community of Woodfibre.

Now the Squamish Historical Society wants to know more about the origin and the purpose of the quilt —something that even Mary didn’t know about.

Betty Adamson, the vice-president of Squamish Historical Society, is seeking more information on the quilt. She is hoping that perhaps someone whose grandparents lived in Woodfibre may recall a story about the quilt, and get in touch with the society.

Adamson is confident the quilt was destined for some community good.

“I don’t know whether it came from the church, or it was a benefit quilt to raise money. I don’t have any of that history and my hope is to connect with someone who knows the story behind this quilt,” she said.

In the past, the historical society has also displayed the quilt at the Brackendale Fall Fair and is now working with the local quilting group so it can be repaired.

“The quilt must be 80 or 90 years old and some of the stitching is coming out of the edges and it need some touch-up,” Betty said.

Adamson says even though the quilt is old, she is hoping someone would be able to provide the back story or some context.

“Was it for a church event, or was it made for the local legion, or the ladies auxiliary? We would really like to know the story behind the quilt,” she said.

“We have so much history and documentation of Woodfibre and knowing more about the quilt would supplement that history,” she said.

Here is a list of the names on the quilt. Please contact Betty Adamson at woodbet@shaw.ca if you see a familiar name or if you know more about the quilt.

I just want to comment that I believe that Dorothy and Philip Hickstrom is probably wrong. The last name is Wickstrom. They were my aunt and uncle. My maiden name was Wickstrom.

. My name is Cordelia Louise (Inglis) Bowden My mother and father were David & Dorothy Inglis , my brothers are (David) Lyall & Bruce J. Inglis. I married my high school sweetheart, Ian Bowden. We raised 3 boys & 1 girl (Ian, Richard,David&Shirley. I did notice a few missed spellings regarding sir names. I was born in 1935 and my young brother in 1939 therefore the article would have to be no older than 8o years, If you wish to talk to me I am now living in Forest Grove, B.C., phone # 1-250-397-4119. Best Wishes to everyone plus oldtimers.

I may of made a mistake Cordelis Dornan could have been my grandmother Cordelia Dornan. She was Peggy Dornans stepmother & my mother was Peggys stepsister.

They have not included my grandmothers name on the quilt but they do have my grandfathers. I know my grandmother died in late 1946 or early 1947. Esme Alice Beckett was probably my mother. Percy Parker was my grandfather

I have been thinking about this quilt and if I remember correctly Mrs. MacGregor was a widow living with Mary & Less. Could this be a remembrance quilt given to Mrs. MacGregor when her husband passed.

Hi! Cordelia again. I made a mistake. Please forget my first comment. After going over the list I realized one was girls club & ladies guild. The quilt is most likely to be about 70 or 75 years. The girls club was formed by mom (Dorothy Inglis) and other moms (can not remember their names), because some fathers formed the Cubs and Scouts. We were taught the basics of sewing, embroidery, knitting, crotchet, clay flowers for brooches and earrings,(how to paint them), Painting of figurines, corsages and rug hooking. The quilt may have been done by the club and guild, then raffled to buy supplies. Thank you for this chance to express myself. Cordelia
