Boaters warned of hazard in Mamquam Blind Channel

staff report
May 13, 2020 1:03pm

Squamish RCMP and Transport Canada are making the boating community aware of a hazard in Mamquam Blind Channel.

Those on the water should be aware of a submerged steel pipe with jagged edges.

The hazard is at GPS: 49 41.488’ 123 9.290’.

The pipe is currently marked with an orange buoy, and Squamish RCMP are urging all boaters to be cautious about the hazard.

Meanwhile, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue is also urging caution and reminding people to wear a life jacket. In fact, tomorrow, May 14, is National Life Jacket Day and RCMSAR is asking people to share photos while wearing life jackets.

The BC SAR is also urging caution for those who are planning to go on water.

“Be prepared, wear a lifejacket, or a personal floatation device, don’t drink alcohol, and make sure you are familiar with your chosen activity,” the non-profit said.

BC has recorded a 35% increase in search and rescue incidents from this time last year.
