Vancouver Coastal Health is warning the public about scamsters calling from a number that appears to be from the Squamish General Hospital.
VCH is asking people to not provide personal information over the phone if they receive an unexpected call from the hospital.
There are reports of someone presenting themselves as a hospital employee and asking for personal identification, including full name, Social Insurance Number and date of birth.
No one from the hospital would ask for detailed identification information, VCH said.
Although the calls may appear to come from Squamish General Hospital, they are not in any way associated with Vancouver Coastal Health.
“This has the hallmarks of a phishing scam, where scammers trick people into providing personal information to be later used fraudulently,” said Catherine Loiacono, the director of public affairs and stakeholder relations for Vancouver Coastal Health.
She said VCH has informed the RCMP about the scam.
“If you receive an unexpected call from Squamish General Hospital, please don’t provide any personal information.”
If you have received one of these calls, you can contact the hospital at 604-892-5211 to determine its legitimacy.
