Vancouver man dies after drowning in Alta Lake

The man who was rescued by Whistler RCMP from Alta Lake yesterday  has passed away.  Police were informed that the 20-year-old Vancouver man died last night.

Whistler RCMP will continue to work alongside the BC Coroner’s Service and the name of the man will not be released at this time, said Sgt. Sascha Banks of Squamish RCMP.

“Many people worked together to help locate and provide medical care yesterday afternoon and we want to thank everyone for all their efforts,” Banks said.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man”

Whistler RCMP were able to rescue a man from Alta Lake, although the details of the incident are not yet clear.

On July 28, at approximately 4:10 pm, Whistler RCMP were contacted about a man who was swimming in the Alta Lake. The person who called the police said he wasn’t able to locate the man in the lake.

Police arrived on scene at the Rainbow Park portion of Alta L​​ake, located the man and brought him to shore.

He was treated by paramedics and was transported to hospital.

“This incident is still in its infancy and certain details are not known at this time” says Sergeant Sascha Banks.

“I am aware of social media posts and a large crowd in the area which is why we are releasing basic details at this time,” she said.

If anyone witnessed what occurred at Alta Lake today and has not spoken to police please contact the Whistler RCMP 604-932-3044.
