76-year-old motorcyclist killed in crash on Duffey Lake Road

staff report
September 2, 2020 5:13pm

A 76-year-old motorcyclist passed away after an accident near Cayoosh Creek on the Duffey Lake Road in the 8500 block of Highway 99.

The accident happened on August 26 at approximately 3:25 pm, although details of the accident were released today by Whistler RCMP.

Police investigation has determined that the lone rider, a 76-year-old woman from Alberta, lost control of her bike, collided with a barrier and was then thrown down an embankment.

Emergency personnel made effort to save her life, but she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

On August 13, at approximately 2:35 pm, Pemberton RCMP were notified of a motorcycle accident once again on the Duffey Lake Road in an area of several switch backs.

A 42-year-old woman from Alberta lost control while navigating one of the switch backs and was thrown off from her bike.

She was taken to local area hospital and then to the lower mainland for injuries that were described as serious by Whistler RCMP.

Too bad that a life has to end during what one enjoys … but lets not fool our selves, I am now 78 and was always active… but going out to the garden and turning some soil can now put me in a bind for a couple hours … just this week some friends have taken an unexpected fall and now deceased … so do not feel sorry for any old fart that takes a hit…. the body does not recover after around 70 years of activity from a traumatic sudden stop … so quit fooling yourself… want to live a little longer, stay away from dangerour shit… like M/C and ladders… stay at level ground … want to enjoy life to the end, do what your want, but
please do not bother me with the results.

I just wish that motorists slow down , the road always gets the blame but road doesn’t move it’s the drivers that are wreckless. So slow down and live longer .
The same thing every year , motorcycle accident on Duffey Lake Road and getting themselves killed while on holiday

I’ve ridden the Duffy on a big bike and the switch backs are covered in loose gravel. When you think you need to slow down, you really have to slow down, its like hitting a sheet of ice and the road is just too curved. This could happen to anyone.

Duffey Lake Road is a route to traverse with care & caution even for experienced operators given the terrain. Its idiosyncrasies are unpredictable even if one knows the road. Its a twister. Lots of curves, blind spots, come around a corner could be a rock slide or wildlife including human forms, cyclists, vehicle breakdowns or accidents. Big Trucks. Wide loads. Tires blow too. Easy to go off. Hit the gravel on the side and flip. A few rock faces are body breakers. There is some steep hills. Avoid speed. Can bounce, drift or slide. No making up time. Super Easy Does It Everybody. Drive like u do not know the road. SLOWLY

Don’t blame bikers always, whoever is responsible for maintenance of that road does not do good job during the summer time. So much loose gravel, leftover from winter ice management and no efforts or any work whatsoever to remove it/sweep in spring and make that beautiful road much safer…
