Police to revisit previous trespassing incident at gondola

staff report
September 15, 2020 10:55am

Squamish RCMP will revisit a trespassing incident at the gondola when two people scaled the tower and triggered the alarm.

Sgt. Sascha Banks of Squamish RCMP said the incident happened few weeks ago. Two people, she said, were able to scale one of the gondola towers, setting off the alarm.

The police were able to locate and identify the two individuals, although they were not deemed suspicious.

“We identified who they are, and we didn’t deem them to be someone of risk of cutting the cables. They didn’t have the tools to cut through the cables like they did today,” Banks said.

However, the police will have a fresh look at that incident again. “That is definitely an avenue we will be looking at,” she said.

Banks did not comment on the progress of investigation into last year’s vandalism.

“They are still working on the leads, but these are not simple investigations. They require a lot of resources, lot of data. They require a lot of analytical work to be done,” Banks said.

Banks said RCMP would reach out to various agencies to see what information could be retrieved that may point out to the motives of the person committing the crime.

She also urged people to share information with the police.

“Please come forward and give us names, any talk about this on the chatrooms. We are looking for those people to come to us and share information,” she said.

The gondola has also provided Squamish RCMP with CCTV footage, and the police would go through it with a fine-tooth comb, Sgt. Banks added.

Having random people just climbing one of the gondola towers doesn’t raise any alarms about the poor security?
    Weeks later……
    Another cable cut!!
    Very pathetic!
If I caught folks trespassing where they aught not to be, I’d be amping up the precautions.
A wonderful old statement reads: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
Or in this case, millions and millions of dollars!!!
