Squamish RCMP are urging caution after local citizens fell victim to CRA scam and text message scams.
On September 24, Squamish RCMP received a report from a local citizen who said they had fallen victim to a Canadian Revenue Agency phone scam.
The complainant had been coerced into providing their social insurance number by scammers.
Squamish RCMP want to remind the public that government agencies would not call to collect personal details on the phone.
The scammers are skilled and highly manipulative, making it easy for people to fall prey, said Sgt. Sascha Banks of Squamish RCMP.
On September 25 too, Squamish RCMP received a report of a fraud from a citizen.
The citizen had opened a link that was sent in a text from what the person believed was from the bank.
The citizen clicked on the link to confirm identity in the bank’s security protocol, but then had money transferred out of the account.
“Be extremely cautious when opening links on text messages or emails on your device. Always ensure that you take extra steps to verify the sender, prior to opening the link,” says Sgt. Sascha Banks.
